After the compulsion on metered rickshaws, Nashikites will soon observe PREPAID RICKSHAW SERVICE from Nashik road railway station to 27 different points in the city. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has decided to execute the service which is expected to come into the picture before the end of August. The precise date will be announced on 15th August 2013. To experiment the proposed plan, Bharat Ratna Magasvargiya Sahakari Grahak Sanstha Panchavati has been allotted the responsibility. For the same they will be paid Rs. 2 per service, irrespective of the distance they travel.

Highlights:

  • The services will be available for 24 hours.
  • Rate chart for the different routes will be displayed near the pre-paid cabin
  • Vehicle trace option is also made available to avoid any loss or theft.
  • Passengers can register complaints at 18002331516

The District collector, Vilas Patil said, “We have finally decided to make it happen. The decision to start the prepaid rickshaw service was pending for a long time. The district administration, RTA and the traffic police carved out a way in which the services would be implemented, managed to ensure that it is a success”

An addition 20% will be charged to the passengers other than the normal fare. The RTO officer Mr.Jeevan Bansod said, “The extra fare has been designed to provide incentives to the rickshaws that are participating in the project. No auto rickshaw, which is not participating in the prepaid scheme, will be allowed up to 200 meter from the prepaid rickshaw booth”.

Deputy Commissioner of traffic police, Mr.Nandkumar Chaughule said “that there were chances that the people would oppose the scheme. But this is the way the things have to happen, considering the safety and security of passengers. The credentials of rickshaw drivers will be maintained with the NGO for a period of one year, so that those who misbehave will be traced”.

Not supporting to the proposed plan, a consumer activist, Vilas Deole raised a question stating, “Prepaid or paid meters, why extra charge? Passengers demand safety and security and that is why they opt for metered rickshaw. It is but obvious that rickshaw drivers will be attracted into the scheme but at the cost of additional 20% charge. Does the RTO have any procedure to revert it in the near future?”

This might help some people but on the other hand can prove to be costly to some pockets. Indeed a good initiative in the city.
