Are you nursing broken heart?

With this alarming statistics and hundreds of youngsters living life in the fast lane, the future of the country looks worrisome because India is a country whose maximum population is young.

If we roll back the clock a few years, whenever people complained of heart ache or a nursing a broken heart, it was due to a failed love affair. But a today, if someone keeps talking or complaining about his heart don’t be surprised if he is suffering from some kind of a heart ailment. With coronary artery disease (CAD) hitting India in a big way, the joke soon might become a bitter reality.

Our city is racing to match up and rub shoulders with its comrades Mumbai and Pune. Those who have lived in Nashik for five or more decades will vouch for the fact that the city has undergone a sea change in terms of its lifestyle. In the rat race of reaching the finish line and achieving more in less amount of time has already started showing its adverse effects on the people and the cases of heart ailments have started to escalate.

Dr. Pranav Shimpi, a well known Cardiac Rehab Specialist from Nashik shares, “The primary cause identified for CAD is basically consumption, abuse and addiction to tobacco, gutkha products, which is surprising because the state has a ban on Gutka. The good news is that not all heart patients with CAD need to go for a bypass surgery. In fact the ones with stable, slow developing chronic CAD can be managed

through rehabilitation medicine and medicine alone. Now if we jump to what needs to be actually done, all I can say is to stay away from the cause of blockage formation. Here are a few thumb rules: Watch your diet, exercise and meditate every day and for the long term, simply become better at management for elimination any short term causes of stress. I mean management lessons in time, energy as well as stress management are important skills to learn.”

Coronary arteries carry blood and oxygen to the heart; therefore any disease which affects the coronary arteries deprives the heart of oxygen — the extreme form of this deprivation occurs during myocardial infarction (heart attack). Let us take a look at the most common causes being attributed to heart attack in young people.

1. Smoking:

What begins as a fashion statement in college days later turns out to be a habit touh to get rid of. It is the single largest risk factor for a young individual developing MI. Smoking is the worst thing you can do to your heart and to nearly all your organs. Not only smoking, all forms of tobacco consumption are equally dangerous. Tobacco causes the blood vessels to be stiff and less elastic, increases the tendency for blood clot and blocks the flow in the coronary arteries.

Heart patients should kick the butt immediately

Also we need to get rid of the common misconception is that people who smoke occasionally are not at risk of a heart attack. You wil be thrilled to know that once a person quits smoking, it will take three years for the body and heart to recover from the effects of tobacco, so you can imagine the consequences of the person continuing to smoke.

2. High cholesterol levels:

While some cholesterol is necessary for good health, too much cholesterol spells nightmare. Though the total cholesterol levels are a predictor of heart disease, many Indians who develop MI have normal cholesterol levels. This is because even though their total cholesterol levels are normal, they have low levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) and high levels of  bad cholesterol (LDL) Bad cholesterol has a higher blood clot forming tendency.

3. Diabetes:

India is already touted to be the Coronary Diabetic capital of the world. This should serve as a wake up call for those who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

4. Hypertension

Changing food habits leading to an increase in salt consumption, stress coupled with sedentary lifestyle or a highly stressful lifestyle. Most of us live on deep-fried snacks ad other fast-foods when hungry between meals. Not only do they have a high salt content but they are also sources of trans-fat. People with high blood pressure are likely to develop CAD because high BP.

5. Obesity

Obesity is a common among heart patients

Ironically, in India, the problem with nutrition is that the poor have too less to eat and the rich have too much. Obesity is a combination of poor physical activity, a stressful lifestyle and an unhealthy food culture. Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are all companions of obesity. Indian obesity can be defined a little differently. We may not be obese overall, but have abdominal obesity that is excess fat deposit around the belly. Unfortunately, it is this belly fat which is dangerous because all the visceral fat cells can easily enter the liver and get stored as fat.

6. Physical inactivity

Physical inactivity not only leads to both heart disease and hypertension but also diabetics and other lifestyle diseases.Eighty per cent of our young population is physically inactive; the remaining 20% that frequents the gyms concentrates on muscle building rather than aerobic training which is more beneficial. Youngsters must undertake aerobic physical activity for 30-60 minutes a day for at least five days a week.

7. Stress

Many studies reveal that the recent stress in personal or professional lives is a cause of many physical as well as mental ailments. With most of the work happening from the desk and at unearthly working hours (Call centres) which often takes a toll on the body.  and due to poor sleep quality, young IT professionals and BPO employees have high stress and run the risk of developing heart diseases. The adverse effects of sitting down for too long has become equivalent to the hazards of smoking.

We like the way Dr Pranav put this across, ” I guess it is  most important thing for a person with or without a disease is to be able to live a normal fearless life and more emphasis should be put on that.” In fact he shared that a few of his heart patients climbed Kalsubai peak this World Heart Day. Other people with heart ailmets from Nashik can take inspiration from them and brace themselves up for a healthy life.

Climb little mountains to finally conquer the peak. We wish a healthy life and a even healthier heart.
