Exclusive city bus services for women only, by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), began yesterday.

Prominent personalities flagged off the service at Mela bus stand on CBS-Ojhar MiG route. Considering the rising number of women commuters in the city, MSRTC has started the service on 10 routes in the city from yesterday.

NCP girls’ wing organiser and architect Amruta Pawar, Shefali Bhujbal, NCP district president Adv. Ravindra Pagar, city president Sharad Koshire, corporator Kavita Kardak, MSRTC employees union president Baba Waghchoure and regional union secretary Vijay Pawar flagged off the services and broke the coconut. Women were demanding exclusive bus services for them since last few days.

Various organisations had given memorandums about the various complaints like, no time to board the bus, non-availability of seats and the rising incidents of eve-teasing. Apart from this NCP girls’ wing had organised a march, led by Adv. Amruta Pawar, to the divisional office in previous month.

They demanded 35 buses for women only with women conductors. Thereafter MSRTC completed all the planning and arranged separate buses and women conductors for women on 10 routes in the city. MSRTC sources informed that additional buses would be provided to women following more recruitment. Earlier, exclusive bus services for women were started on Dhruvnagar-Borgad and Nimani-Nashik Road routes. MSRTC had then stopped the service on Nimani-Nashik Road route following the dismal response by women.
