NASHIK-MUMBAI TRAVEL TIME TO BE CUT DOWN
A good news for train commuters on the Nashik-Mumbai route is that the Central Railway has taken the decision to change engines of all long-distance trains at Kurla instead of Igatpuri. This will save ten minutes of travelling. It could be possible because railways have made many technical changes in the rail route between Igatpuri and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kurla, informed railway sources.
Igatpuri station is located on the boundary of Bhusaval and Mumbai regions of Central Railway. All the long-distance trains coming from other states, except those travelling within the state, take a halt at Igatpuri station for around 15 to 20 minutes to change the engine. Here Bhusaval region’s engine is changed and Mumbai region’s engine is attached to the trains and then they are sent forward. This usually used to take 15 minutes.
The train coming from Bhusaval region used to stop at Igatpuri where the engines were changed. After switching on the engine, the air pressure for brakes was adjusted in the entire train. The guard used to travel from engine to the last bogie and check the air pressure and give his written report to the driver. Then the train was sent forward. This process used to take 10-15 minutes.
The locomotives in the Central Railway’s Bhusaval region run on 25,000 Kilowatts of power supply. But the locomotives in Mumbai and other regions use lesser power. Therefore, it was necessary to change locomotives while crossing over into the other region. But now the railways have converted the Igatpuri to Kurla route to 25,000 KW capacity and hence the same engines can run up to Kurla from Igatpuri where they can be changed.
In the future the railways are planning to convert the route till Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in Mumbai to 25,000 KW capacity. This will eliminate the necessity to change the engines and save the travel time.
This cut down of travelling time from Nashik-Mumbai travel will be very convenient for people as it would make travelling easier and less time consuming.
