SOLAR TRAFFIC SIGNALS TO BE FIXED IN NASHIK

Nashik is growing at lightning speed in almost all aspects. But with development comes problems and for these issues the government sorts solutions. One of the major issues currently being faced is the heavy traffic at most major areas in the town. Measures to solve the traffic woes have been undertaken by Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) before the onset of the forthcoming Kumbh Mela.

The NMC has planned to plant 9 new solar operated signals in the major locations and overcrowded areas. The best part of these signals is that they are solar operated, it would work even when there is no power supply in the city. The installation of the signals will help to control the traffic during Kumbh Mela to avoid traffic issues.

The fixation of the signals is expected in the next financial year 2014-2015, for which a budget of around 1 crore is allotted in the civic budget. As per the plan 3 traffic signals will be put up on Nashik Road, 3 in the central part of the city, 2 in Panchavati area and 1 in Cidco. There are total 28 traffic signals across six divisions of NMC, of which only 3 signals are solar operated. For the remaining 25 traffic signals across the city, provisions are made to soon make them solar operated and a tender worth Rs 18.95 lakh has been sanctioned by the civic administration.

The NMC official said that, “All traffic signals will be solar operated so that they function even during power cuts. Moreover, all these proposed traffic signals will be fitted with Countdown Timer System that will help motorists to switch off their vehicles and start them few seconds before the signal turns green. This will not only reduce the pollution, but will also save fuel.”

The installation and working of traffic signals will start before the Kumbh Mela and we hope that the efforts taken by NMC helps in lowering down the traffic hindrance to some extent.
